Asanoha (Japanese meaning: hemp leaf), geometric patterns. This pattern symbolizes prosperity and health.

Asanoha (麻の葉) is a classic and traditional Japanese geometric pattern depicting hemp leaves (asa = hemp, ha = leaf). The pattern has been one of the most recognizable designs in Japanese fabrics and art for over 1,200 years.

    • Design: The pattern consists of a hexagonal grid (often based on a six-pointed star) that strongly resembles the leaves of the hemp plant.
    • Symbolism: Because hemp grows quickly and straight, the pattern symbolizes healthy growth, vitality, and a long life .
    • Protection: Traditionally, the pattern was often used on baby clothes, in the hope that the child would grow just as fast and vigorous as the plant.
The triangles within the pattern were also considered protection against evil spirits.
  • Applications:
    • Textiles: Widely used in kimonos and sashiko embroidery.
    • Architecture: Found in kumiko (traditional Japanese wooden lattices) and sliding doors (shoji).
    • Design: Currently popular in modern interiors, fabrics, and graphic design.
